Former Parish Priest of St Cyril, Netherley, Father John Grady, died on Friday 18 May at the age of 77 and just one month short of the celebration of his Golden Jubilee of ordination.
John Grady was born in Wigan on 17 February 1935, the son of Michael and Helen Grady. He attended St John’s School, Wigan, and St Joseph’s College, Upholland, before studying for the Priesthood at the English College of St Peter and St Paul, Lisbon. He was ordained at in the college chapel there on 16 June 1962.
Following ordination he served as Assistant Priest at St Sylvester’s, Liverpool from October 1962; then in the Isle of Man at St Mary of the Isle, Douglas from February to November 1966 moving then to St Patrick, Clinkham Wood until September 1970 when he went to St Laurence, Kirkby and in March 1977 to St Jude, Wigan. In September 1980 he was appointed as Parish Priest at St Cyril, Netherley, sadly his tenure there was brief, as ill health forced his retirement in 1982.
His Funeral Mass was celebrated at St Mary’s, Wigan, on Tuesday 29 May followed by burial at St Marie’s, Standish.
